News from the Music Program:

It's been a busy fall semester for our musicians. Mahalia Dean, Kaylee Kelleher, Sara Powell and Julia Ussailis played with Franklin County Honor Band. Kaylee Kelleher and Mahalia Dean are also members of the Pioneer Valley Youth Orchestra. Singers Wyatt Bandy-Page, Sara Paige and Matthew Taylor were accepted to the Western District Festival Chorus. Matt Taylor will have the honor of joining the All Eastern Mixed Chorus next spring in Atlantic City, New Jersey - quite an achievement! Congratulations to all on their accomplishments this year!
On Wednesday evening December 14, Select Chorus sang for the School Committee on their way to a performance for the Shelburne Falls Womens Club. Finally, the Winter Concert on December 8 was a success and we'd like to thank everyone in the Mohawk community for their wonderful support of the music program.

Music News

From Principal Lynn Dole's June 4, 2016 Newsletter:

High School Music News from Mr. Halligan

The drum awaits the drummer before the start of Senior Awards Night. The Mohawk Concert Band played the Processional as the Seniors marched into the auditorium.

As the year comes to an end, our music students have a lot going on - as usual! You can read below about our year-end activities: Band, Chorus, and Rock Band members will perform at Graduation.  Recording sessions are taking place.  Band, Chorus, and Select Chorus students will visit elementary schools for outreach performances.  And, Final Exams are approaching!  In addition to all of this activity among our students, parents have a major event on Tuesday, June 14, when the Mohawk Music Association elects new officers!  Please be involved!
This has been a great year for our music students! Thank you to everyone who came out to hear our students perform this year, and to everyone who contributed their personal time and energy to our numerous events and fundraisers!
Scott Halligan

High School Band, Chorus, and Rock Band members will be honoring the graduating class with performances at Graduation this Sunday.  Call time for student performers is noon.  The ceremony begins at 1:00pm.

Recording in Progress!
The Mohawk Chapter of the Tri-M Music Honors Society is funding recording sessions of student work!  Recording engineer Tommy Byrnes of Southpaw Recording brings a mobile recording studio to the Mohawk Auditorium to work with our students and record some of their best work.  The first recording session took place on May 25, and a second recording session is scheduled for June 7.  Among the music being recorded is a set of large group choral pieces, several small group a cappella songs, and an original composition for hand bells by senior Josh Paige.  The recordings will serve as a memento for our seniors, and a potential portfolio demonstrating musical achievement for our students who seek to pursue music in college. In the case of Josh Paige and his original composition “Snowflakes Falling,” the recording may become commercially available.  More info to come!

Elementary School Outreach Performances
High School and Middle School Band and Chorus members will be visiting our elementary schools on Monday, June 13 to give outreach performances.  Students will perform at BSE, Hawlemont, Heath, Colrain, and Sanderson.  Unfortunately we are unable to visit Rowe due to logistical constraints.

Music students will have final performance exams before the end of the year.  These exams can be performed live in the music room or can be recorded and emailed to me at shalligan@mohawkschools.org

Summer Opportunities
Students have several opportunities for making music over the summer!  Band members should strongly consider playing with the Shelburne Falls Military Band and/or the Ashfield Community Band.  Singers should consider attending Summer Sings with the Pioneer Valley Symphony Chorus, where they can sing gorgeous music (like the Brahms Requiem on June 28) with a large choir!

An additional opportunity for singers is the Harmony Explosion camp at Worcester State University, August 4-7.  Full Scholarships are available!  This is a weekend music camp for high-school aged singers.  Visit the Harmony Explosion website for more information.  Contact me ASAP if your student is interested in attending: shalligan@mohawkschools.org

Mohawk Music Association Meeting, June 14
The Mohawk Music Association will meet on Tuesday, June 14 at 6:30pm in the Mohawk Library to elect officers for the 2016-17 school year. Be there!
