Fundraising – Coupon Books
Students participating in the trip to Annapolis are offering valuable coupon books for sale.  The books are being sold for $25, and they each include 12 coupons for 10% off at Big Y!  Students earn $10 credit toward their Annapolis trip for each book they sell.  So please, support our students, and save big at Big Y!  This is a Win-Win!  Ask a music student for more information, or email me at shalligan@mohawkschools.org

Recap – Student Open Mic
Students in Mohawk’s chapter of Tri-M hosted a very successful Open Mic event last Thursday, Nov. 19!  The event was free and open to the public, and took place in the Mohawk’s colorful, resonant front lobby.  More than 40 people were in attendance, and students from Mohawk Middle School and High School and the Academy at Charlemont gave performances including music, beat boxing, poetry, and magic tricks.  Congrats to all the performers!

Students Win Senior District Festival Audition http://www.mmeawd.org/
Congratulations to Zach Arfa, Lexxey Boron Smith, Isaac Paige, Josh Paige, Sara Paige, Adam Hallenbeck, Ady Harris-Fried, Guy Rice-Lesure, Andy Robertson, Zeke Rodriguez, Matt Taylor, Eli Wickland-Shearer, and Lily Wickland-Shearer for their acceptance to the Senior District Festival Chorus! Auditions were held at Westfield State University on Saturday morning, Nov. 8, and preliminary results were posted that evening online. These students are invited to perform at Umass in January in the Senior Districts Music Festival as members of the prestigious, highly selective Senior District Festival Chorus.

The Western District of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association hosts two annual music festivals at UMass; the Junior Districts Festival for students in middle school grades, and the Senior Districts Festival for students in high school grades.  Each festival features an honor choir, honor band, honor orchestra, and honor jazz band made up of the students from around the region who are accepted by audition.  Students in these ensembles have the opportunity to work with prestigious guest conductors and perform music that is more challenging than what can typically be done in high school music programs.

Middle School News from Mrs. Clark
Hello everyone! It has been a very busy fall so far, and it looks like we will be busy into winter as well.

Falcons Game (more photos and video)
This past Friday November 13th our MS Band and Chorus students performed at the Falcons game in Springfield. The Band began by performing on the concourse as fans were arriving and the Chorus performed the national anthem on the ice just prior to the game. It was great to see so many families join us for this event! In addition to a great performance, we raised approximately $600 that will be applied to our Six Flags performance!

Senior Center performance
On Tuesday December 8th the MS Chorus will be performing for the Shelburne Falls Senior Center’s holiday luncheon. Last year the Senior Center and I were trying to coordinate this event together, and although our students performed at the senior center, it was not at their holiday luncheon. We are very happy that we are able to coordinate this event. In addition, I am working with Cooking teacher Marsha Gray to try to coordinate her class baking cookies for us to deliver to the Senior center for this event. We are hoping to collaborate in this way 3 times this year, traveling to other senior centers in our community. Students will be performing at 1:00 on December 8th and you are welcome to come and watch! In addition, I will need 2 chaperones who would be willing to ride the bus with us for this event. Please contact me if this is something you can do!

Winter Concert
As you know, our Winter Concert is Thursday December 10th at 6:30p.m. I will be calling the MS band at 5:30 to rehearse together prior to the performance. Please remember that all students are wearing concert dress for this concert! I have begun fitting for vests, and have sent some students home with their tuxedo shirts. I will continue this process this week. Students will need to provide their own: Black dress pants, black socks, black dress shoes: Please no tights, leggings, sneakers, or flip-flops.

Mocha Maya’s
Art teacher Rachel Silverman is coordinating a showcase of arts at Mocha Maya’s highlighting Mohawk students on January 15th. I am hoping to have perhaps the 8th grade band perform at this event, and maybe a small group of vocalists. I am still thinking about this and will give more information soon.

Communication
At this point I am communicating information to families in the following ways:
·      Ms. Dole’s bi-weekly News from Mohawk newsletter
·      Information sent home
·      NEW: MS band and Chorus email contact groups
The email groups seem to be working rather well this year as I am able to send out detailed information to specific (and perhaps smaller groups). I have gotten several email responses indicating that it is helpful to receive messages in this way. Please continue to check my class pages for continued updates! I have been including messages on my home page indicating what pages I have made updates, or have added new information to.

Junior Districts http://www.mmeawd.org/
We have 8 auditions happening in the Middle School this year!
I have sent all information and payment. The auditions are scheduled for Saturday December 5th with a snow date of Saturday December 12th.
We have the following auditions happening:
·      Treble chorus: 2 auditions
·      Male chorus: 2 auditions
·      Concert Band: 3 auditions
·      Jazz Ensemble: 1 audition

What is #GivingTuesday?

We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.

Music News

From Principal Lynn Dole's November 8, 2015 Newsletter:

Mary Lyon Spelling Bee - Bee there!
High School Music News from Mr. Halligan

November is off to a great start for Mohawk Music!  Read below about our recent trip to see “Something Rotten” on Broadway.  Also below you can find info about our upcoming events.

Broadway trip Recap

On November 4, many of our students participated in a trip to see "Something Rotten" on Broadway!  Students enjoyed the spectacle and wit of this original show, which lampoons the world of Shakespeare and the world of Musical Theater.  Ushers in the theater commented on how well our students behaved at the performance, saying that they get a lot of school groups in the theater but very few as polite and well mannered as ours!

Thank you to all of our chaperones who helped to make this trip to NYC possible for our students!

Select Chorus at the Mary Lyon Spelling Bee - Nov. 10, 6:15pm

Come early to the Mary Lyon Spelling Bee next Tuesday!  You will be greeted by our High School Select Chorus in the foyer between 6:15-6:30.  The Mary Lyon Foundation is a generous supporter of the arts, along with all aspects of high quality education.  This is the 10th annual Community Spelling Bee, and every year the Bee raises money for educational projects.  We in the music department are delighted to have the opportunity to perform at this important event!

In 2013 the Mary Lyon Foundation donated a very important musical instrument to the Music Department: a gong! We use the gong in performances by Concert Band.  The gong will also be featured in the Spelling Bee, where it will signal the end of each round.

So come on down to the Community Spelling Bee next Thursday, hear some great music…and sit for a spell!

Senior Districts Audition – Nov. 7

On Saturday, November 7, Select Chorus students participated in the Senior Districts audition at Westfield State College.  The following students have been accepted to participate in the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Western District Senior Music Festival at UMass Amherst in January:
Lexxey Boron Smith
Ady Harris Fried
Lily Wickland Shearer
Sara Paige
Zach Arfa
Adam Hallenbeck
Isaac Paige
Josh Paige
Matthew Taylor
Guy Rice-Lesure
Andy Robertson
Zeke Rodriguez
Eli Wickland Shearer

Some of these students may also be eligible to audition for the All State Festival.  The audition itself was a very rich learning experience for students, who got to apply their skills and practice for how to present themselves in life's big moments. We congratulate all our students who participated this enriching experience.

Winter Concert – Dec. 10, 6:30pm

Please mark your calendars for our upcoming Winter Concert!

Middle School News from Mrs. Clark

NYC: This past Wednesday many middle school band and chorus students attended a live Broadway production of “Something Rotten” which told the story of two brothers writing the world’s very first musical in the time of William Shakespeare. All of our students had a great day and ushers at the theater commented on how polite our students were. Thank you to all who have made this trip possible!

Falcons Game: Friday November 13th is our field trip to the Springfield Falcons hockey game. Band students will perform prior to the game, and the chorus will be performing the national anthem on the ice! An itinerary and permission slip went home this week to Chorus students. Band students will take this home Monday. Please make sure to fill out and return this permission slip by Friday. We have sold over 90 tickets and have made over $500 to go to our Six Flags field trip!

Winter Concert: Our winter concert is fast approaching! On December 10th the MS and HS will present their annual winter concert at 6:30 p.m. in the Mohawk auditorium. This is a mandatory performance, so please mark your calendars!

Concert Dress: All students will be required to wear concert dress at our Winter concert. The school provides: vests, bow ties, and tux shirts. Students are required to provide: black dress pants, and black dress shoes/socks. Please see my class pages under “concert dress” for more guidelines concerning concert dress.

Junior Districts: The Junior District audition is on December 5th. We have already begun rehearsing in groups for this audition. For this week I have the following times available for extra help. Monday 2:15-2:45, Tuesday 2:15-2:45, Friday 2:15-4:00. Please let me know if your child plans to stay any of these days for extra help. gclark@mohawkschools.org
