High School Music News from Mr. Halligan
Here is the latest news from the High School Music Department!

Ashfield Fall Festival Recap
Congratulations to our Select Chorus and Citrus and the Fruit Bowl, who performed at the Ashfield Fall Festival on Sunday, October 11!  The weather was perfect, and our singers gave a spirited performance on the town common for an appreciative audience that included several Select Chorus alumni!  Thank you Larry Parnass for inviting us to be part of the festival!  Thanks also to the First Congregational Church for providing us with a space to warm-up (people were drawn in from outside during our warm-up, asking, “Who is this?” and “This is a high school chorus?”).
Congratulations are also due to the Mohawk Music Association for setting a new sales record at the famous Baked Potato Booth!!  Many parents and students worked very hard to run the booth, and their hard work paid off with a major success this year.  Thank you, and congratulations!!

Fundraising – Business Sponsorships, Concert Program Ads
Students in the High School music program are seeking business sponsorships.  For a tax deductible donation of $100, businesses support an individual Mohawk Music student’s tuition for the Annapolis Music Festival in April.  In return, businesses receive advertising in our Concert Programs.  If you have a business and are interested in sponsoring a student, please email Mr. Halligan at: shalligan@mohawkschools.org

ACDA Festival – Mohawk students performed at UMass on October 24
A group of Mohawk students performed at the Mass ACDA/UMass High School & Collegiate Choral Festival on Saturday, October 24.  Students from all over New England gathered at UMass Amherst to participate in the festival, where they rehearsed with Dr. Jeffrey Douma, Yale University Professor of Conducting.  The concert was at 5:30pm at the Fine Arts Center. This year’s repertoire was the classic, iconic, incredibly epic “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff.

“Something Rotten” – Nov. 4 trip to Broadway
Mrs. Clark and I are excited about the upcoming trip to see "Something Rotten" on Broadway!  About 85 students and chaperones will be participating in this special trip.  Permission slips and more information will be coming home with students soon.

High School Music News from Mr. Halligan
Here is the latest news from the High School Music Department!

Annapolis, MA – Deposit due October 17
High School Band and Chorus members will be traveling to Annapolis this April for the Annapolis Exhibition Festival.  Deposits are due on or before Oct. 16.  I suggested $50 for the deposit, but I will accept deposits of any amount.

Fundraising!
This is the season when the music department is very actively fundraising.  The MMA had their Pie Sale at the Booster Day Game, and they will also have their famous Baked Potato Booth at the Ashfield Fall Festival this weekend!  These baked potatoes from the Teddy C. Smiarowski Farm in Hatfield are hefty and delicious, and they come with toppings of your choice: bacon, broccoli, butter, cheese, chives, salsa, salt & pepper, sour cream, taco meat (ground turkey & seasoning) – all free!  Plus, if the weather happens to be cold, your baked potato doubles as a hand warmer!

Middle School and High School Music Students are taking orders for Florida Citrus until October 23.  Proceeds benefit the students directly and help to pay for their trips this year (Annapolis Festival for High School students, Music in the Parks for Middle School students).  Citrus orders will arrive in time for Thanksgiving!

Students in the High School music program are also seeking business sponsorships.  For a tax deductible donation of $100, businesses support an individual Mohawk Music student and in return receive advertising in our Concert Programs. If you have a business and are interested in sponsoring a student, please email Mr. Halligan at: shalligan@mohawkschools.org

Select Chorus and Citrus and the Fruit Bowl at Fall Festival – October 11, 11:00-11:45
Our Select Chorus and our young men’s vocal group Citrus and the Fruit Bowl will be performing at the Ashfield Fall Festival this year!  Come to check out their latest work (and stop by the Baked Potato Booth)!  They have a prime time mid-day time slot; Main Street and the town common are sure to be packed!  Be sure to get there early to park!

Middle School Music News from Mrs. Clark
NYC:
Payments have been coming in rapidly! At this point we only have about 5 spots left on the Middle School bus. By Tuesday, if there are any available spots I will offer them to High School students who were not able to secure a seat on the HS bus. If you have given a $40 deposit, the remaining $35 is due on October 14th so we can pay the final bus fee.

Falcons:
The MS Band and Chorus will be performing at the Springfield Falcons hockey game on November 13th. Tickets are $18, with the MS Music department profiting $6 per ticket. Students (including performers) are required to purchase a ticket. Students may sell to any family, friends etc. The Band will be performing prior to the game, and the Chorus will be performing the national anthem on the ice! This is a great fundraiser, a fun event, and a great way to spend the evening with family in support of the music department. Please see a middle school music student, or contact me if you would like to purchase a ticket.

Communication:
In addition to the bi-weekly newsletter, classpages, and sending home information, I have created MS Band and Chorus email lists and I will be sending out information regarding upcoming performances, MMA news, etc. as a way to further increase communication with families. If you have not filled out the form that went home the first day of school, please contact me.

Fundraiser:
The MS will be partnering again with the HS department for the citrus fruit sales. Orders are due on October 23rd in order for fruit to be in by Thanksgiving break. There is information on my classpages, and students have taken order forms home. If you would like an order form, please contact me. Gina Clark at gclark@mohawkschools.org

Junior Districts:
Junior Districts is an audition-based music festival combining middle school music students from all over Western Massachusetts. There are a variety of ensembles including: Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Chorus, and Orchestra. Auditions will be held on Dec. 5th at Westfield State University. If selected, students would then participate in 2 all day rehearsals, and a concert at UMASS. This is a wonderful and enriching experience for students, and I encourage any student to consider auditioning. (The fee is $11 per audition and students may audition for more than one ensemble) If your child is interested in participating, please contact me. Some students have taken forms.

Non-Music News: the Booster Day Parade was cancelled due to rain.
Even though the parade was canceled, the class floats were on display at Mohawk. Here is the Senior float, a Senior float builder, and the Senior float driver.
