Virginia Trip!
I am writing from Williamsburg, Virginia, where our Concert Chorus,
Select Chorus, and Concert Band participated yesterday in the
Worldstrides Heritage Performance Competition.  We are having a great
time on our trip!  For photos and video visit the MMA website at

Our two choirs performed at the Kimball Theater in Colonial
Williamsburg, adjacent to the College of Williams and Mary.  Our
Concert Band performed in nearby Heritage High School in Newport News.
All of our groups gave very strong performances and received
supportive feedback on stage from adjudicators.  In fact, the
adjudicator for Concert Band, who teaches music at Old Dominion
University and helped our group achieve a fuller, richer sound, in the
end was moved to tears by our students’ playing.

Apart from our performances, we have had a lot of additional
activities here in the Williamsburg area.  On Thursday evening we
attended a bittersweet, deeply moving concert at the Great Hopes
Plantation on the development of African American music.  Immediately
after the concert we went on a “Ghost Tour” – a late night guided
walking tour of Colonial Williamsburg with ghost stories.  Friday
morning we returned to Colonial Williamsburg and students had time to
explore.  The area is set up as a “living museum,” and visitors are
welcome to enter buildings and gardens and speak with costumed
interpreters who describe the circumstances of life in the Virginia
Colony.  Friday evening we attended the Virginia International Tattoo,
a showcase of traditional military bands from the United States,
France, Denmark, Finland, and Korea.  Saturday morning we visited the
historic Jamestown Settlement for a guided tour, and we will spend
Saturday afternoon at Busch Gardens amusement park.

Soon we will attend an Awards Ceremony to learn the results of the
competition!  We’re hoping for high ratings and rankings!  But at the
same time, we have had so many special moments on this trip
(spontaneous singing in restaurants and on the bus, incredible
concerts at Kimball, Heritage, Great Hopes Plantation, and the Tattoo,
our special moments backstage before singing, our moment with our
adjudicator for Band, our chance meeting with friends in Colonial
Williamsburg, and our many priceless hours together as a group) and
that’s really what it’s all about.
