Gonnnnnng! "Boards Up Please."

Mohawk senior Laura P. is ready to strike the gong, as classmate Eliza C. keeps an eye on the stopwatch. The Mohawk Music Department's gong, a gift from the Mary Lyon Foundation, was sounded at the end of each 30 second time period allotted for writing the spelling word on the team's whiteboard. The Spell Master, Art Schwenger, would then instruct the teams to raise their boards to the judges and the audience. Photo credit: Peter Otten.
The 9th Annual Mary Lyon Foundation Community Spelling Bee was a huge success, with 24 costumed teams vying for the title of "Queen Bee Speller" and entertaining the large audience in the Mohawk auditorium. This event is a fundraiser for the Mary Lyon Foundation and they had many great raffle and silent auction prizes. The Mary Lyon Foundation is a generous supporter of the arts, along with all aspects of high quality education. Last year the Community Spelling Bee raised $7000 for educational projects.

The evening began with a rousing gospel song ("Trouble Don't Last Always" by Rev. Timothy Wright) performed by the Mohawk Concert Chorus under the direction of Scott Halligan.

Congratulations to the winners of the Grand Championship Round, The Spelling Beans, sponsored by Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters. They correctly spelled furfuraceous (fur·fu·ra·ceous  adj \ˌfər-f(y)ə-ˈrā-shəs\, definition: consisting of or covered with flaky particles), outlasting the other finalists: TEAM Robert STRONG WoodWORD,  Hager's Hags, and the National Honor Society.

Hager's Hags competing in Round II.

The complete list of Grand Championship Round words:
  1. forsythia
  2. moccasin
  3. equivalency
  4. leviathan
  5. auxiliary
  6. furfuraceous

Music News

From Principal Lynn Dole's November 9, 2014 Newsletter:

High School Music News from Mr. Halligan
November is off to a great start for Mohawk Music! Read below about our recent Rock Band Concert with Trailer Park. Also below you can find info about our up-coming events.

Rock Band Concert Recap
photo credit: Trailer Park Facebook page
Rock Band students had a great night last Friday! Student rockers performed an hour of great music in the Mohawk Auditorium, including classics like “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Blackbird,” along with more current hits like “All About That Bass.” This was the debut performance for many Mohawk students, and everyone did a great job! Student emcees Nick Brown and Leif Miraglia introduced each act and entertained the crowd with their comedic antics. Stage Tech students were also involved in the event this year as stage managers and lighting technicians, which gave the event a more organized and professional vibe.

In the second half of the concert “the ten-legged rock and roll machine,” otherwise known as Trailer Park, brought the house down! Students danced their hearts out in front of the stage and got to see first-hand how a successful band puts on a great show.  Proceeds from this event benefited the Mohawk Music Association! Visit their website for some great photos of the concert:  http://www.mohawkmusicassociation.org/2014/11/mohawktrailrocks.html

Several members of Trailer Park will be coming to the music room on Monday for a follow-up visit with our Rock Band class.

Chorus will perform at Mary Lyon Spelling Bee - Thursday, Nov. 13, 6:30pm
Come to the Mary Lyon Spelling Bee this Thursday! You will be greeted by our High School Concert Chorus in the foyer between 6:00-6:30. Then at 6:30, our singers will help to kick-off the Spelling Bee with a rousing gospel song. You won't want to miss this!

The Mary Lyon Foundation is a generous supporter of the arts, along with all aspects of high quality education. Last year the Community Spelling Bee raised $7000 for educational projects. We in the music department are delighted to have the opportunity to perform at this important event!

Last year, the Mary Lyon Foundation donated a very important musical instrument to the MusicDepartment: a gong! We use the gong in performances by Concert Band. The gong will also be featured in the Spelling Bee, where it will signal the end of each round.
Gong - a gift to the Mohawk Music Department from the Mary Lyon Foundation

So come on down to the Community Spelling Bee next Thursday, hear some great music…and sit for a spell!
Benefit Concert with Select Chorus and Hilltown Harmony – Nov. 22, 3pm. Trinity Church, Shelburne Falls
Mark your calendars for this very special event! Our Select Chorus will be joining together with the Hilltown Harmony Community Choir in a benefit concert for the Opioid Taskforce of Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region. The concert will be held at Trinity Church in Shelburne Falls at 3:00pm. Please be there and show your support for our singers and our community!

Student Wins Senior District Festival Audition
Congratulations to Zach Arfa for his acceptance to the Senior District Festival Chorus! Auditions were held at Westfield State University on Saturday morning, November 8, and preliminary results were posted that evening online. As a member of the prestigious, highly selective Senior District Festival Chorus, Zach will be performing at UMass in January in the Senior Districts Music Festival.
The Western District of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association hosts two annual music festivals at UMass; the Junior Districts Festival for students in middle school grades, and the Senior Districts Festival for students in high school grades. Each festival features an honor choir, honor band, honor orchestra, and honor jazz band made up of the students from around the region who are accepted by audition. Students in these ensembles have the opportunity to work with prestigious guest conductors and perform music that is more challenging than what can typically be done in high school music programs.
Congrats again, Zach!

Fundraising – Coupon Books
Students participating in the trip to Virginia will soon be offering valuable coupon books for sale. The books will be sold for $25 each, and they include some great coupons to Big Y, like four coupons for 10% off entire purchase - no matter how big! A small but enthusiastic crowd came to cheer for Mohawk's Rock Band students and then stayed to dance in front of the stage to the tunes of the "ten-legged rock and roll machine" named Trailer Park.

Many, many thanks to Trailer Park band members James Robinson, Rick Page, Greg Lauzon, Joe "Jopey" Fitzpatrick, and Tom Mahnken (Mohawk alum) for coming to Mohawk and showing how it's done!

See Mr. Halligan's recap of the event at the bottom of this post.
