An addendum from Ms. Glover:

NYC UPDATE:
* Reminder - Final payments are due by October 7th.
* We currently have 9 tickets available. If you are interested in coming along and would like to purchase a ticket please contact me at glover@mohawkschools.org, or Mr. Halligan at shalligan@mohawkschools.org. You may also find info and permission slips on my class pages (see link below)
* If you are a chaperone for this trip don't forget to fill out a CORI form a.s.a.p. You will need to bring your license to the front office at Mohawk. This process usually takes several weeks, so please plan accordingly. This is going to be a great trip and the students are getting really excited!!

WINTER CONCERT:
Believe it or not our Winter Concert is only 11 short weeks away, on December 10th. Students will be fitted for their vests and tuxedo shirts in the very near future. Vests and shirts are owned by Mohawk and students use them for various performances throughout the year. Students are required to provide their own black dress pants, black dress shoes, and black socks. Please see my class pages for more information on the concert dress policy. (link below)

FUND RAISER:
Students should have received information on the Citrus Fundraiser. This is a fundraiser that Mr. Halligan has set up for the High School students as a way to minimize their Virginia trip payment. Mr. Halligan has offered for Middle School students to join in on this as well, as a way to help with the cost of our Six Flags field trip in May. The Music Association has once again generously donated the $29 per student performance fee for each student, as they have done in the past. This leaves the fee for the ticket to get into Six Flags, as well as the bus fee for the day. These 2 items usually total between $45-$60.00. This fundraiser is a way for students to work to individually reduce this payment, and, if students sell enough citrus they may even be able to go for free! The orders are due by October 31st and fruit will arrive in time for Thanksgiving!

OPEN HOUSE:
A BIG thank you! to all of the Chorus students who came out to sing for Open House. I was thrilled with attendance, and the professionalism the students exhibited. I have had so many compliments from parents of music students, and parent of non-music students. What a great way to start of the year! It was also fantastic to be able to meet so many parents at open house that evening and I look forward to seeing you at our Winter Concert.

CLASS PAGES:
Just a reminder that my class pages are a great way for parents to receive information about everything regarding the music program. From concert dress, performance schedule, field trip information … it's all there. There's even a monthly calendar which lists what days are band or chorus days, so students will never be unclear - especially as we get into the snow day season and schedules tend to change quickly. Please use this as a resource and check often as I add information each week. (see link below)

MMA:
Our next Mohawk Music Association meeting will be held on Tuesday October 7th at 6:30p.m. in the library. This is a very busy time for us with Booster week, and Ashfield Fall Festival right around the corner. So… if you were thinking about attending a meeting or volunteering, now would be great time!

PIES:
The Music Association is looking for a donation of pies to be sold at the Booster Day game on October 3rd. Pies can be of any flavor, but should be in a disposable pie plate if possible. The pies can be dropped off at the music room on October 3rd (during the day) or at the pie tent near the front gate of the football field by 4:30 or after. Thank you for your help!

Invitation to "Cantate" at Keene State College, Oct. 24

The Mohawk High School Concert Chorus and Music Director Scott Halligan pose on the campus of Keene State College prior to the 2013 Cantate Choral Festival

Hi everyone,

I would like to invite you to join me and the High School Concert Chorus at the Cantate Choral Festival at Keene State College, on Friday, October 24. It would be delightful to have you with us! This is a fantastic event for our students, and I think you would be thrilled to experience it first hand.

Choirs from all over New England come to Keene State to participate in the festival, where they perform and receive on-stage coaching from college music faculty. The college choirs also perform, and the event ends with an "all sing" in which students from all participating schools perform together as a massive choir. It's a spectacular, inspiring event!

This is a great focal-point for my classroom instruction, both before and after the event. It's a very rich, authentic learning experience for our students.

Cantate is scheduled for 9am-1pm on Friday, October 24 at Keene State College. You are welcome to come with us on the bus, or you can drive separately if you need to come late or leave early (you will just need to pick up a visitor parking pass on campus). Once the performance schedule is set for the day, I can let you know what time our school will be performing.

Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about this. I hope you will consider joining us!

Sincerely,

Scott Halligan

Williamsburg Trip Deposit Change

From Music Director Scott Halligan:
Many students are taking advantage of the opportunity to see Aladdin on Broadway, which costs $105. Payments are due for that trip soon ($60 by Sept. 23, and the remaining $45 by Oct. 10), and late payments cannot be accepted.
For the trip to Williamsburg for the Heritage Festival I had originally requested a $100 deposit due on October 1, but in the interest of making it more feasible for families to participate in both trips I am moving my deposit due date to Oct. 17 and reducing it to $50
Here is the revised payment schedule for Williamsburg:
October 17: $50 deposit due (non-refundable)
November 7: $50 payment due
December 5: $50 payment due
January 9: $50 payment due
February 6: $50 payment due
March 6: balance due

I am attaching my letter to families re: Williamsburg with this revised payment schedule.

Music News

From Principal Lynn Dole's September 1, 2014 Newsletter:

This will be an exciting year for Music at Mohawk! Ms. Glover and Mr. Halligan have lots of great concerts and events planned, including the Winter and Spring Concerts, a rock concert featuring Trailer Park and student rockers, a trip to New York City to see a show on Broadway, and a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia over April Vacation for high school band and chorus members! It's a great year to be involved in Mohawk Music!

For the Middle School:
Welcome to another school year! The MS Music department has many fun and exciting events planned for this year already! Our first performance will be at the Open House on Thursday September 18th. CHORUS only will be performing and I would like all students to report to the music room at 5:30 that evening. We will be performing in the foyer as parents are arriving that evening. (No uniforms necessary - please wear your nicest clothes!)

*We also have plans to see a Broadway show in November (this trip is ALMOST all set). This trip will include both HS and MS music students and parents. Please let me know if you would like to chaperone. More details will be provided soon!

*Your child should have received a syllabus during their first class. Please take a moment to go over this with your child. Also - My class pages are up and running. Please take some time to visit them. Any information regarding schedules, grading policy, uniform policy, links to our Facebook page, MMA information, as well as a schedule of events for the year can be found here. I will update these pages regularly as this is a vital means of communication. Please try to visit the class pages once a week for updates.

* I look forward to another fantastic year as middle school music director here at Mohawk (my 10th) and I welcome any questions or feedback from you: gglover@mohawkschools.org.
Thanks,
Gina Glover, Middle School Music Teacher

For the High School:
Wednesday Evening Music
On Wednesday evenings, high school students can participate in special evening classes of Band and Chorus. If your student can't fit band or chorus into their schedule, this is for them! If your student has wanted to try band or chorus, this is a great opportunity for them to get their feet wet! Anyone can come to try it on and see if it's for them. Mr. Halligan is hoping for as much student participation in music as possible!

The high school band needs new members to play drums and percussion, tuba, trombone, euphonium, and other instruments. The high school chorus can always use more voices - especially young men's voices! No experience is necessary, and the more the merrier! It's a friendly environment where students all learn to make music together.

Students who decide to enroll in Evening Band or Chorus will earn 1 credit per semester for their participation. Also, they will be eligible to go on the trip to Williamsburg, Virginia over April Vacation to perform in the Worldstrides Heritage Music Festival, visit historical sites, attend concerts by the Virginia International Tattoo, and spend a day celebrating at Busch Gardens amusement park! (Their parents are eligible to chaperone, too!) For more info, visit: http://hp.educationaltravel.com/event-item/williamsburg-music-festival/

Wednesday Evening Band and Chorus classes are scheduled in the evening on Professional Learning Days to give students ample time for homework, athletics, and downtime. Here is the schedule for evening music classes:

Wednesday Evening Band: 5:00-5:45pm
Wednesday Evening Chorus: 5:50-6:35pm

We hope to see your students there!!

Select Chorus
The High School Select Chorus will begin rehearsing this week! Select will rehearse on Wednesday evenings this year: 6:40-7:30pm

The first performance of the year by the Mohawk Select Chorus will be on October 12 at the Ashfield Fall Festival, from 11:00-noon. Mark your calendars! And while you're there, you'll want to visit the Mohawk Music Association booth for a delicious Baked Potato!

Mohawk Music Association
The next meeting for parents of music students will be on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30pm in the Mohawk Library. If you are the parent of a music student at Mohawk, come and let your voice be heard! Fundraisers will be planned and votes will be taken. Be there to participate! For more info visit: http://www.mohawkmusicassociation.org
