The Arts at Mohawk

From Principal Lynn Dole's February 23, 2014 Newsletter, a Wizard of Oz update from Director Shelley Roberts and Music Department news from Middle School Music Director Gina Glover:

The Wizard of Oz: March 7, 8, and 9
Back Row:  Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (sophomore Sarah Malone), Cowardly Lion (junior Samantha Harris-Fried), Wicked Witch of the West (junior Laura Purington).  Front Row:  Tin Man (sophomore Zach Arfa), Dorothy(senior Ashley Robertson), Toto, Scarecrow (sophomore Amar Abbatiello).

Greetings,

It’s hard to believe but Mohawk’s production of The Wizard of Oz opens in less than two weeks! Time is flying by!  Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated very well but we’re adapting to her theatrical style! During February vacation the cast and crew are in high gear. Rehearsals are going on, sets are being built, and lights are being programmed.  This is a very exciting time, indeed! There have been so many people who are helping out and feverishly working to make this a successful show!

The week before vacation, art teacher Shoshana DeAtley came in after school to help a couple of the cast members make masks for our talking apple trees! They look awesome! School Committee member and parent Willow Cohen has generously offered to help out with advertising and has some really great ideas to promote the show! Also, we are having a live pit orchestra too! Allow me to introduce you to our musicians who will be playing under the baton of Scott Halligan. I give you *Amy Roberts-Crawford, *Kris Danielson, Aaron Lakota, Meg Bowen, *Melissa Willis, *Ted Wirt, Cliff White, Joe Fitzpatrick and Andy Wrba! Those who have an asterisk before their names are Mohawk alumni too!

On Thursday, February 27, 2014 the cast is taking the show on the road! We will be visiting all the elementary schools to give them a sneak preview.

Make sure to pick up a copy of the Shelburne Falls & West County Independent newspaper because The Wizard of Oz is going to be a feature under Hilltown Life!

Last week the reservation phone line was set up so we are now taking reservations! Mohawk Music Association member and parent Sherry Taylor has kindly offered to take care of ticket reservations, which is wonderful! If you are interested in reserving tickets check out the information below.

Can you help us locate these props?
We are still searching for the following props to enhance our magical set: an old bicycle (think mom's or grandma's old no-speed), needs to work; a bubble machine; 1-2 old lanterns or flashlights; an old oil can; an old metal pail, and a few large round plastic flower pots.  Please contact Michelle LaRocque at mlarocque@mohawkschools.org if you have these items.  Thank you

Music at Mohawk

Middle School Music Teacher Gina Glover sends this message:

Hello music families,

We have a busy spring ahead and I wanted to let you know of several events that will be happening.

The Middle School Chorus has been working on a song in the native Cherokee language. On March 3rd we will have an amazing opportunity for a member of our community (who is a Cherokee) to come in and help with pronunciation, share historical aspects of the songs, share Native American instruments, as well as incorporating other songs and dances. Students are very excited and are looking forward to this workshop.

March is Music in our Schools Month, which celebrates music education in schools across the nation. The music department at Mohawk will provide a performance for MS and HS showcasing all of the hard work and achievement the music ensembles have experiences this year. These performances will be scheduled in March.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the MS band and chorus will not be taking a trip to Boston this year. We will be taking our trip to Six Flags on May 3rd, and any payments that were made for Boston will now be applied to that trip. The Mohawk Music Association has donated roughly $1400.00 to this trip! For further information and permission slips please visit my class pages!

Finally, it is not too early to save the dates!

**Our Spring Concert will be held on Thursday, May 15th at 6:30p.m. In the auditorium.
** band students will be marching for Memorial Day this year, Monday, May 26th

Wizard of Oz Rehearsal Photos

Mohawk Middle School Music Director Gina Glover shared a few Wizard of Oz rehearsal photos.

Professor Marvel (senior Robbie Buoniconti) uses his crystal ball to convince runaway Dorothy Gale (senior Ashley Robertson) to return to her Aunt Em's and Uncle Henry's farm. Toto watches from Dorothy's lap.

Dorothy, Toto, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (sophomore Sarah Malone), shrink back as the Wicked Witch of the West (junior Laura Purington) vows to avenge her sister's death and claim her magic ruby slippers from Dorothy.

Glinda rescues the travelers from the field of poisonous poppies. Back row:  Glinda, Cowardly Lion (junior Samantha Harris-Fried), Wicked Witch of the West. Front row:  Tin Man (sophomore Zach Arfa), Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow (sophomore Amar Abbatiello).

The Wicked Witch of the West threatens the travelers one more time before they are granted an audience with the great and powerful Wizard of Oz.

Tess Performs National Anthem at Nordic Skiing State Championship

Tess, a member of the Mohawk Select Chorus, was honored to sing the Star Spangled Banner before the start of the Boys MIAA State Championship Nordic Skiing race at the Notchview Reservation in Windsor MA on February 11, 2014.

Tess sings the National Anthem

It was a cold and breezy day, with the temperature at about 18 degrees F at noon when she sang. The race director (standing beside Tess in the photo above) commented before Tess sang that if you've never heard her sing before, you are in for a treat. He was right!

Competitors and spectators view the flag

Following the singing of the National Anthem the boys race began. The girls teams had raced earlier in the morning, starting at 10:30 am.

The first wave of boys racers await the START command!

For you Mohawk sports fans keeping score at home, the Mohawk Girls team finished 10th out of 17 teams and the Mohawk Boys finished 8th out of 17 teams. Congratulations to all of Mohawk's skiers for a gutsy performance on a cold and windy day!

The orange cone marks Mohawk's lane at the red starting line of the race course.
The OPEN flag flaps in the wind.
