Music News

From Principal Lynn Dole's September 1, 2014 Newsletter:

This will be an exciting year for Music at Mohawk! Ms. Glover and Mr. Halligan have lots of great concerts and events planned, including the Winter and Spring Concerts, a rock concert featuring Trailer Park and student rockers, a trip to New York City to see a show on Broadway, and a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia over April Vacation for high school band and chorus members! It's a great year to be involved in Mohawk Music!

For the Middle School:
Welcome to another school year! The MS Music department has many fun and exciting events planned for this year already! Our first performance will be at the Open House on Thursday September 18th. CHORUS only will be performing and I would like all students to report to the music room at 5:30 that evening. We will be performing in the foyer as parents are arriving that evening. (No uniforms necessary - please wear your nicest clothes!)

*We also have plans to see a Broadway show in November (this trip is ALMOST all set). This trip will include both HS and MS music students and parents. Please let me know if you would like to chaperone. More details will be provided soon!

*Your child should have received a syllabus during their first class. Please take a moment to go over this with your child. Also - My class pages are up and running. Please take some time to visit them. Any information regarding schedules, grading policy, uniform policy, links to our Facebook page, MMA information, as well as a schedule of events for the year can be found here. I will update these pages regularly as this is a vital means of communication. Please try to visit the class pages once a week for updates.

* I look forward to another fantastic year as middle school music director here at Mohawk (my 10th) and I welcome any questions or feedback from you:

For the High School:
Wednesday Evening Music
On Wednesday evenings, high school students can participate in special evening classes of Band and Chorus. If your student can't fit band or chorus into their schedule, this is for them! If your student has wanted to try band or chorus, this is a great opportunity for them to get their feet wet! Anyone can come to try it on and see if it's for them. Mr. Halligan is hoping for as much student participation in music as possible!

The high school band needs new members to play drums and percussion, tuba, trombone, euphonium, and other instruments. The high school chorus can always use more voices - especially young men's voices! No experience is necessary, and the more the merrier! It's a friendly environment where students all learn to make music together.

Students who decide to enroll in Evening Band or Chorus will earn 1 credit per semester for their participation. Also, they will be eligible to go on the trip to Williamsburg, Virginia over April Vacation to perform in the Worldstrides Heritage Music Festival, visit historical sites, attend concerts by the Virginia International Tattoo, and spend a day celebrating at Busch Gardens amusement park! (Their parents are eligible to chaperone, too!) For more info, visit:

Wednesday Evening Band and Chorus classes are scheduled in the evening on Professional Learning Days to give students ample time for homework, athletics, and downtime. Here is the schedule for evening music classes:

Wednesday Evening Band: 5:00-5:45pm
Wednesday Evening Chorus: 5:50-6:35pm

We hope to see your students there!!

Select Chorus
The High School Select Chorus will begin rehearsing this week! Select will rehearse on Wednesday evenings this year: 6:40-7:30pm

The first performance of the year by the Mohawk Select Chorus will be on October 12 at the Ashfield Fall Festival, from 11:00-noon. Mark your calendars! And while you're there, you'll want to visit the Mohawk Music Association booth for a delicious Baked Potato!

Mohawk Music Association
The next meeting for parents of music students will be on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30pm in the Mohawk Library. If you are the parent of a music student at Mohawk, come and let your voice be heard! Fundraisers will be planned and votes will be taken. Be there to participate! For more info visit:
