 Music News

Great job music students who performed at our Spring Concert on Wednesday May 21st. What a wonderful showcase of our various musical ensembles and we had an excellent audience! It was great to see how many of our students are involved in music.

Memorial Day: On May 26th the Middle School Band will be performing in Colrain for their Memorial Day services at West Branch Cemetery. We will be meeting at the cemetery at 9:00a.m. (rain or shine). If you need to get into the school that morning Ms. Glover will be at Mohawk from 8:30-8:45 only! Also - remember to wear your black pants/shoes and a white polo shirt.

On June 13th and June 16th Middle and High School music ensembles will be "on tour" performing for all of our district elementary school students. The groups will perform at BSE, Colrain, and Sanderson on Friday, June 13th, and Heath, Hawlemont, and Rowe on Monday, June 16th. Permission slips will be sent home next week, or you may print one out by visiting the "permission slips" link on Ms. Glover’s class pages.

Mohawk Bands Participating in Memorial Day Services

High School Band
An informal parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday with a ceremony at the Ashfield Town Hall, 412 Main St., then proceed up Main Street to the Ashfield Plain Cemetery for a second ceremony honoring veterans. At 11:30 a.m., the procession will return to the Town Hall area for the Lions Club chicken barbecue across the street at the First Congregational Church.

Middle School Band
At 10 a.m. on Monday the Colrain Memorial Day ceremony will begin with a parade that will step off from the back of West Branch Cemetery. It will follow the roads around the cemetery to the bridge over West Branch River. A ceremony will be conducted on the bridge. The parade will continue on to the cemetery for more services.

Invitation to Tonight's Spring Concert

From an email sent yesterday by Mohawk Music Director Scott Halligan:

Hello everyone,

You are cordially invited to attend the Mohawk Middle School & High School Spring Concert, this Wednesday evening at 6:30pm in the Mohawk Auditorium. Come see our award-winning student bands and choirs in action - they will blow you away! We are doing some phenomenal music, and it's going to be a GREAT night!!

Oh and by the way, there will be a 50/50 raffle, concessions to enjoy, and also a silent auction for the honor of conducting the HS Band in one of their marches...ever wanted to be a conductor? THIS IS YOUR CHANCE!!! All proceeds go to the Mohawk Music Association and directly support our student musicians!

Spring Concert

Well, it is May and that means the Mohawk Music Department will be performing their Spring Concert. The concert will be held this coming Wednesday, May 21st at 6:30pm in the Mohawk Auditorium.

Mohawk Music Director Scott Halligan conducts the Chous at the Riverside Church in NYC.

The Spring Concert features performances from the Middle School Band and Chorus, and the High School Band, Chorus, and Select Chorus. The district 6th grade music students will also perform a song with the Middle School Band and Chorus!

During intermission, the MMA will be having a refreshment table. We are looking for donations of food for the concession table. Please contact Sherry Taylor by email to let her know if you plan to bring something for the concession table. If you might be available to help at the concession table during intermission, let her know that, too.

The MMA is hoping to have a 50/50 raffle and we are making plans for a Silent Auction for the opportunity to be the Guest Conductor for a number in the second half of the concert! Doesn't that sound like a great opportunity?!

MMA Meeting

Please join us in the school library on Tuesday, May 13, at 6:30 pm. One of the things on our agenda will be nomination of officers for next year. We will also be getting updates from our music directors about how their year has been going and what plans they have on the horizon (and beyond). And, there will even be a surprise or two that you are sure to enjoy! We would love to see you at our monthly meeting.

The Arts at Mohawk

High School Music
Student performers in the High School Concert Band, Concert Chorus, and Select Chorus have brought home victories from New York City! On April 25, they participated in the Worldstrides Heritage Performance Festival and competed against schools from across the country and Canada. The festival took place in the stunning Riverside Church in New York City. After each of the groups performed, judges from the festival also spent time coaching them on stage. They were very complimentary of our performances.  Mohawk’s Concert Band came in 3rd in their division with a Bronze. Senior Kai Herzig conducted one of the selections for the band. Concert Chorus won a Gold 1st in the 1A Mixed Choir division, and Select Chorus won Gold 1st in the 1A Chamber Choir division! Sophomore soloist Sarah Malone won the festival's prestigious Maestro Award for "extraordinary musical ability and sensitivity." It was a very good day for us! 
Other activities on the trip included seeing "Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway, learning a scene from that show in a Broadway workshop, and taking a dinner cruise around Manhattan.

Middle School Music
On Saturday, May 3 students from the Mohawk Middle School Band and Chorus participated in the Music in the Parks festival at Six Flags New England. Students performed at Holyoke High School and were able to watch performances from schools from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Hampshire. The Mohawk Band and Chorus each received a first place rating in their category with a rating of good for the band and an excellent for the chorus. Students then enjoyed a day riding the rides at Six Flags!

Mary Lyon Foundation Celebrates Local Education at the Spring Lyonnaise on Sunday, May 18
The annual Spring Lyonnaise sponsored by the Mary Lyon Foundation will be held this year on Sunday afternoon, May 18 from 2:00-5:00 pm at the Shelburne Buckland Community Center on Main Street in Shelburne Falls. This free event, a celebration of excellence in local education, is open to the public. There will be music, awards, raffle prizes, student exhibits and a presentation by the 2014 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year, Anne Marie Bettencourt. The very first Massachusetts Teacher of the Year was Roy Frude, a beloved Arms Academy science teacher.   All are welcome to attend!

Music Program
This year the Mary Lyon Foundation donated a very large gong to the music department at Mohawk. It will be used in a wide variety of presentations as well as sounding the end of each round in the annual Community Spelling Bee.

ARTeens Art Exhibition
The ARTeens program ends this year with a Teen Exhibition and fund-raising event that opens on May 31, 2014 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.  Several Mohawk students have participated in this program and they will be sharing their creative work.  They are also inviting other students to submit their work for inclusion in this art exhibit.  The exhibit runs from May 31 to June 27.

WHERE: The ArtGarden, 14 Depot St. in Shelburne Falls (in the Trolley Museum Building)

WHEN DOES THE EXHIBIT RUN: May 31st – June 27th

(Since some art doesn’t hang on walls, performances are welcome at the reception.

WHEN DOES THE ART WORK GET DROPPED OFF:  May 21 - May 23 between 1-5pm

WHEN DOES THE ART WORK GET PICKED UP:  After the show is over, June 28 - July 3

OTHER DETAILS: If possible, your work should be ready to hang (for 2D work) or display (for 3D work).  We will hang at least one piece by every teen, but feel free to submit more than one piece.

The exhibit is part of a fund-raising event on May 31st for ARTeens, a free afterschool program for Franklin County youth. It is also one of The Art Garden’s on-going community exhibits, funded in part by Local Cultural Councils including Conway.

Award-Winning Performance at the Riverside Church

The Mohawk Concert Chorus performed "Can You Hear?" by Jim Papoulis & Francisco Nunez at the Riverside Church in New York City on April 25, while participating in the Worldstrides Heritage Festival and Competition.

They received a Gold rating for this performance, which is the highest possible rating at the festival, and ranked 1st among Mixed Choirs in the 1A division, which is for schools with 600 students or less.

Select Chorus also won a Gold rating, and took 1st place in the 1A Chamber Choir category. The Concert Band won a Bronze rating in their category.

Kids in Concert

You are invited to the Kids in Concert performance at the Mohawk school auditorium on Thursday, May 1, 2014, at 6:30 pm.

Kids In Concert is the annual showcase event for the talented musicians in the Mohawk School System elementary schools:  Buckland-Shelburne Elementary, Colrain Central School, Hawlemont Regional, Heath Elementary, Rowe Elementary, and Sanderson Academy. Students from 4th, 5th, and 6th grades perform together in a combined chorus and a combined band. Also performing will be the Heath Elementary School String Ensemble. Many of these students will continue their musical careers at Mohawk Middle School and High School.

Please plan to attend this great event in the Mohawk auditorium. Admission is free, but showing your support for the young musicians is priceless.

The Mohawk Music Association will serve ice cream treats to all performers after the show.
