The Arts at Mohawk

From Principal Lynn Dole's January 4, 2014 Newsletter:

Mohawk Music is kicking off 2014 with a very special, student-produced Benefit Concert! Featuring: Mohawk Rock Band students - and special guest - Trailer Park.

Friday, January 10, 7pm Mohawk Auditorium.

$10 adults, $5 children, Mohawk students free!

Proceeds benefit the Mohawk Music Association.

For student rockers, this concert will be the culmination of their semester working together collaboratively and will feature performances of classic rock songs, modern rock songs, and original songs.

Trailer Park is a professional rock band that has logged over 700 shows throughout New England. Mohawk alumnus Tom Mahnken is a member of the band. Trailer Park performed on the Mohawk Stage in 2012's Alumni Concert, and we are delighted to have them back for this Benefit.

This concert is being produced by Mohawk sophomore Julian Diamond. Julian is involved in an independent study connected to concert production. After envisioning this benefit concert, and with Music Director Scott Halligan, Principal Lynn Dole, and the MMA as allies, Julian coordinated the details of the event, acted as liaison with professional artists Trailer Park, and wrote and submitted press releases to the media. The concert will be a great achievement for this young student leader.

The Students in the Middle and High School Music Department gave a fantastic Winter Concert on December 12!

Middle School Music Teacher Gina Glover writes: Thank you all for attending our winter concert on December 12. The students were great and really appreciate all of your support, as do I! After vacation we will be diving into rehearsals for the Wizard of Oz. it was wonderful to see so many students auditioning! (We had many elementary students too!). Please remember to check my class pages weekly; we have a busy Spring coming up with concerts, a trip to Boston, and competition at Six Flags planned.

Mohawk Music Association President Sherry Taylor reports that the fundraising initiative associated with the Winter Concert and Valley Gives Day was successful. She writes about the December 12 concert:
“Thank you to Scott and Gina for all their hard work putting it together. Thank you to all the students for their wonderful performance and making us proud! Please pass this on to your children for me.

Also, thank you to all the support given to the MMA on Valley Gives Day. Through Valley Gives on-line and donations given to us at the concert last night, we raised over $1,700. What a great community we live in!”

The Wizard of Oz is coming to Mohawk!

Greetings,

This has been a very exciting month to say the least! Gina Glover, Scott Halligan and I have had the privilege of auditioning so many talented students! We are delighted by all of the talent and the turnout for auditions was fantastic. It made casting a challenge, which is a wonderful situation to be in because we have a great cast!

Rehearsals begin this coming week. For a detailed rehearsal schedule and updates, check out The Wizard of Oz under Class Pages on the Mohawk website:  http://classes.mohawkschools.org/index.php?board=700.0

This production is going to be a lot of work but it will also be tons of fun! If you are interested in helping out in any way please contact Shelley Roberts at sroberts@mohawkschools.org or if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
