Mohawk sophomore Zach Arfa will be performing with a group of advanced high school singers in the Western District Music Festival Chorus at the UMass Fine Arts Center on January 11 at 3:00pm. Tickets are $7.00.
Several Mohawk Music students auditioned at Westfield State University on November 9, which included singing a solo, two scales, and sight-singing. This audition ended up being very competitive, but Zach's audition received an extremely high score. Zach plans to audition for the All-State Honor Chorus in January, and is already practicing!
The MMEA Music Festivals
The Mohawk Music Department is a member of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA), which is a state unit of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). MMEA has over 1,500 members and its goal is to advance and strengthen music education in Massachusetts.
One of the ways Mohawk benefits from the MMEA is through its participation in the District Music Festivals. These are annual events with orchestra, band, jazz and chorus performances whose musicians are selected through audition. There are five districts in Massachusetts; Mohawk belongs to the Western District. The Junior District Music Festival is open to 7th-9th graders for orchestra, chorus, band and jazz. The Senior District Music Festival is open to 10th-12th graders. The musicians who perform especially well in their Senior District audition are recommended for an audition to the All-State Music Festival.
