Shaping Taste in Music

There is an article on the BBC website about a parent's role in influencing the music their children will like.
Can you shape your children's taste in music?

"Many parents can't help but try to shape their children's taste in music. But is it an effort doomed to failure, or worse, will it make children hate the music their parents love, and love the music their parents hate?"
The article concludes
"Whatever parents do or don't do to shape their children's taste, they seem to find what they like. Perhaps all that parents need to do is to open the doors for children, introduce them, in cellist Julian Lloyd Webber's phrase, "to some of the greatest achievements of mankind" and let them explore at their leisure."

""There are no mistakes, they will find their own taste anyway," says Lloyd Webber."

Hilltown Harmony Concert

Our new multigenerational community chorus under the direction of Shelley Roberts has been rehearsing and will perform a concert for the public on Saturday, November 17 at Trinity Church. Music will begin at 3:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the concert. All are invited to attend.

With over thirty members, the chorus is giving voice to our community. They are giving back to the community through music and service. The group is providing the meal for the community supper held at Trinity Church on November 2. When asked to consider what being part of a community chorus meant to them, each member chose one word that defined how they felt and has been photographed with that word. Come see their selected words and photos on display at the concert.

4.  Music News

Music Director Scott Halligan reports that the Select Chorus had a great experience at the Cantate! High School Choral Festival at Keene State College on October 26! Our students performed for a packed auditorium and had the honor of being coached by a member of the KSC music faculty. Students also heard some amazing performances by groups from around New England, and benefited from the coaching that was given to each group. Senior Kaitlin Grant writes, "The festival was fun and informative. I learned a lot both from listening to other ensembles perform and be critiqued, and by being critiqued ourselves." The Festival ended with performances by KSC's superb vocal ensembles, a rousing all-sing with hundreds of voices joined together, and a campus tour given by a Mohawk alumnus. It was a memorable day, and we look forward to returning next year!

The Drama Program class pages is the primary ways Drama Coordinator Jonathan Diamond will be communicating with participants in the program and the cast and crew. So please take the time to familiarize yourself with them. In addition to posting theater related announcements (cancellations, rehearsal schedules, etc.), the Drama Program Class Pages provide answers to many commonly asked questions about the play.

The pages also include information on the program in general, including an overview of this year's season and a roundup of successful events students have participated in thus far. And they're open to suggestions! Mr. Diamond writes, "Please tell us if there are any other topics or queries you would like to see addressed in these pages." If you have any additional questions about the play, the schedule or ways students and families can get involved in the drama program you can email Mr. Diamond at jdiamond@mohawkschools.org.
