Please Join Us

Hi Mohawk music parents,
As this school year is quickly moving along and we have only 2 more scheduled meetings of the Mohawk Music Association, we want to remind you that the MMA is working behind the scenes to provide critical funding for Mohawk's middle and high school music programs. We would welcome your involvement at our MMA meetings, whether on an occasional or regular basis. As students graduate and we lose involved parents, it is crucial that new parents step up if the MMA is to continue to exist. Our numbers are dwindling precariously. While the MMA exists to raise funds for music students, we also have fun and gain a lot of satisfaction along the way. We welcome you to join us and participate in deciding how we can help the music programs.
Remaining meetings in this school year:
Tuesday, June 12 -- Our agenda will include typical year-end activities and voting in new officers for next year. New parents totally encouraged to attend!
We'd like you to know about the contributions that the MMA has made to the middle and high school music programs just this year alone:
-- For the in-school music workshops that the students experienced in March: $1,100 (for the sheet music and stipends). We have received very positive feedback about the benefit of these workshops for the middle and high school students.
-- For the all-school musical: $500.00 for set materials.
-- For the Adjudication/Six Flags trip: $1000.00 (for the non-refundable deposit and to fund loans and/or scholarships for students unable to afford the trip, eligibility to be determined by the music teachers).
Grand total so far this year: $2,600
And more to come this spring! The MMA will be:
-- Serving ice cream to all the elementary students participating in the Kids in Concert event in May
-- Donating $1,000 to help pay for the senior music students' banquet in late May
-- Providing up to $2,500 total in scholarships to graduating music students
-- Providing bottled water for students marching in parades on Memorial Day.
Potential grand total for the year: approximately $6,500
Please consider getting involved in the MMA on a regular basis, so we can keep the MMA alive.

Kids In Concert

You are invited to the Kids in Concert Band and Chorus Concert at the Mohawk auditorium on Thursday, May 3, 2012, at 6:30 pm.

Kids In Concert is the annual showcase event for the talented musicians in the six Mohawk District elementary schools:  Buckland-Shelburne Elementary, Colrain Central School, Hawlemont Regional, Heath Elementary, Rowe Elementary, and Sanderson Academy. Students from 4th, 5th, and 6th grades perform together in a combined chorus and a combined band. Also performing will be the Heath Elementary School String students. Many of these students will continue their musical careers at Mohawk Middle School and High School.

Please plan to attend this great event in the Mohawk auditorium. Admission is free, but showing your support for the young musicians is priceless.

The Mohawk Music Association will serve ice cream treats to all performers after the show.

Making a Living as a Musician

There's an interesting article on titled How To Succeed In The Music Business (By Trying Really, Really Hard).  It refers to a study by the Future of Music Coalition that found 42 different sources of revenue for musicians.

A related study by the Future of Music Coalition (Going to Music School) showed that musicians who are music school graduates earn more than musicians who did not graduate from music schools.
